Great
Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest
of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what
is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the only one of the Ancient World Wonders to
remain largely intact. It is believed that the pyramid was built as a tomb
for Pharaoh Khufu over an approximately 20 year period
concluding around 2560 BC. Originally at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the
pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over
3,800 years.Taj Mahal
In 1631, the city of Agra in northern India was the capital of the wealthy Mughal Empire, which ranged across most of modern-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. That year the Mughal emperor, whose name was Shah Jahan, suffered a terrible tragedy. His wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died unexpectedly. Shah Jahan was full of grief. To honor Mumtaz Mahal, he ordered that an enormous tomb be built—a tomb so elaborate and so richly adorned that it was more like a palace.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is
a pre-Columbian 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres
above sea level. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu
was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472).
Often referred to as the “City of the Incas”, it is perhaps the most familiar
icon of the Inca World
Colosseum
